SB 54

Plastic Pollution Reduction Act

The majority of plastic waste is not recyclable and ends up in landfills or as litter. All of this unnecessary plastic pollutes our communities, harms wildlife, and continues our reliance on fossil fuels (what plastic is derived from). SB 54 made history in 2022 as one of the world’s most ambitious policies to tackle plastic pollution by both requiring the plastics industry to actually reduce the amount of single-use plastic produced and also requiring other plastic products and packaging sold in California to be made of materials that can actually be composted and recycled.
